Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 2026

The seed for a Teams Relay Challenge was originally conceived by the late Andy Anderson for the 1972 13th International Rally held in Nelson and Marlborough, as a 24 hr Le Mans type event. He and his team set out to do what was considered impossible – not only succeeding but arguably running one of the most memorable events in VCC NZ history.

We have adapted this concept to create a modern version of the event that fits into one day – Friday 20th of March 2026. This is not a race or speed event— normal road rules apply – it’s about enjoying the drive, celebrating historic vehicles, and working together as a team. The Teams Relay Challenge is a fun, inclusive, and collaborative event celebrating the joy of motoring history, designed to be accessible to participants of all ages, skill levels and physical abilities. Set on a 1.6km grass course, this event encourages teamwork and camaraderie while showcasing the unique charm of historic vehicles.

Team Format:

There will be up to 10 teams of 30 entrants. You will be assigned a team and captain by the event managers - no stress of creating one youself! On the day the teams will organise how they see fit.
Teams will include a variety of vehicles: motorcycles, cars, and commercials from the VCC classifications (Veteran, Vintage, Post-Vintage, Post-War, P60, and P80). Each team will have a similar mix to keep things as even as possible. Any club eligible vehicle participating in the festival can be used.

Event Structure:

The objective is to achieve the greatest collective distance over a four hour period, with each entrant completing at least 6 laps of the course. If time allows the team manager may look to run additional laps from his/her team members.
Three vehicles from each team may be on the course at a time.
During each participant's turn, there will be mandatory pit stops for a simulated wheel change and fuel refill, adding a fun element of strategy and collaboration.
The pit stop tasks are carried out on purpose-built simulators and not on the entrant’s vehicle. Additionally other team members can also carry out the task for you.
The event has a maximum speed limit of 30mph (50kph), emphasizing smooth driving.
The team that wins will likely have completed the most laps on the track within the 4 hour timeframe without exceeding the speed limit and completed all of the required pit stop tasks.

All driving and tasks, including pit stops, are designed to be non-strenuous and enjoyable, allowing participants to focus on the shared experience.
